'Being considered' – Pafos official confirms Super Eagles CB Awaziem is a transfer target
Published: July 14, 2025
Pafos FC, the reigning Cypriot First Division champions, have confirmed their interest in signing Nigerian international centre-back Chidozie Awaziem to bolster their squad for the 2025-2026 season.
Pafos’ press representative, Christoforos Mattheou, addressed the transfer speculation.
"He is also a player being considered by the planning committee. It is a difficult case, but we are indeed interested," he was quoted as saying by Sigma Live.
This development underscores Pafos ambition to strengthen their defense ahead of their maiden UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign.
Awaziem, a 28-year-old defender currently with MLS side Colorado Rapids, has a robust European pedigree.
His career began at FC Porto, followed by loan spells at Nantes (Ligue 1), Leganés (La Liga), and Boavista (Primeira Liga), where he made 59 appearances.
His standout stint came with Hajduk Split in Croatia, where he won the Croatian Football Cup in 2023.
On the international stage, the 34-cap Nigeria international was named in the Super Eagles squads for the 2018 Fifa World Cup and the 2019 and 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
Awaziem’s experience and versatility make him a prime target for Pafos as they prepare for a demanding season, including a possible participation in European competition.
Pafos are training at elite facilities, including the Spanish National Team’s training center in Madrid, ahead of a final pre-season friendly against Real Valladolid.
Despite the complexity of Awaziem’s potential transfer, given his recent move to Colorado Rapids in December 2024 on a one-year deal with options through 2027, Pafos' interest signals their intent to build a competitive squad capable of making a mark in both Cypriot and European football.
