Versatile midfielder Gonzales open to representing Nigeria despite two senior caps for Ecuador
Published: November 21, 2024
Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told Ecuador international of Nigerian descent Chidimma Estefania Ifema Gonzales has kept the door open for any opportunity to represent Nigeria at senior international level.
Born to a Nigerian father and Ecuadorian mother, she currently plays for Asa Tel Aviv WFC in the Israeli Women's Premier League, and has already earned two senior cap for Ecuador.
However, since her two appearances came in friendly matches, she remains eligible to represent Nigeria.
She formerly featured for Chilean Campeonato Nacional Fútbol Femenino side Club Deportivo Universidad Católica Femenino before making the move to Israel in September.
Prior to her stint with Universidad Católica, Gonzales had previously played for Ecuadorian Superliga Femenino Club Nañas in 2020.
The 26-year-old midfielder who is also capable of playing as a forward, earned her first call-up to Ecuador's senior women's national team in October 2023 for friendlies against Peru.
Although Gonzales was an unused substitute in both matches, she eventually made her debut in early 2024, featuring in a pair of friendlies against Uruguay.
In an exclusive chat, she revealed her uncertainty about which country to represent internationally.
While she has already represented Ecuador, she acknowledged Nigeria's importance and expressed her willingness to wholeheartedly play for the record African champions if the opportunity arises.
This development comes as welcome news for the Nigerian Football Federation, which can still approach Ifema.
Her versatility and skillset would undoubtedly be of use to the current Super Falcons' midfield.
Gonzales' potential integration into the Nigerian team could also provide healthy competition for regulars Toni Payne and Jennifer Echegini.
