CAF Awards: Super Eagles forward Lookman beats Hakimi, Williams, 2 others to win African POTY
Published: December 16, 2024
Super Eagles forward, Ademola Lookman has been awarded the prestigious African Player of the Year title.
Lookman's exceptional skills on the pitch have earned him this accolade, surpassing fellow nominees Simon Adingra, Serhou Guirassy, Achraf Hakimi, and Ronwen Williams.
The 2023/2024 season has been nothing short of remarkable for Lookman, who has shone brightly with Atalanta.
He netted 17 goals in all competitions last season, including a stunning hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, which helped secure the title for his team.
His contributions have been pivotal, showcasing his ability to perform at the highest level.
In addition to his club success, Lookman played a crucial role in Nigeria's campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Despite the team's heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast in the final, Lookman scored three goals and demonstrated his talent on an international stage.
Continuing his impressive form, Lookman has already made significant contributions this season, tallying 11 goals and providing five assists in just 19 matches.
His efforts have propelled Atalanta to the top of the Serie A table and positioned them well for a run in the new UEFA Champions League format.
Similarly, the Elephants of Côte d'Ivoire were honoured as the National Team of the Year after their triumphant victory at the 2023 AFCON tournament, held on home soil.
