'Has a Maradona effect' - Ex-Besiktas star names the one player who outshines Osimhen at Galatasaray
Published: December 18, 2024
Former Besiktas midfielder Sinan Engin has picked Yunus Akgun over Victor Osimhen as Galatasaray's most important player.
Akgun was one of the standout players during the Lion's 4-3 win over Trabzonspor in the Trendyol Süper Lig fixture played at RAMS Park on Monday evening.
He scored one goal and assisted another to help his side protect their unbeaten start to the season and has registered nine goals and four assists in 22 games.
Osimhen was not on the scoresheet against Trabzonspor and only came off the bench as a substitute because he was recovering from an injury.
However, the Nigerian striker has made his mark since making his debut for Galatasaray, notching 10 goals and five assists in 14 appearances.
Despite having more goal involvements than Akgun, Engin stated in his interview with Beyaz TV via Haber Sari Kirmizi that the Turkish star is Galatasaray's best player.
“There are stars like Victor Osimhen, Dries Mertens, Barış Alper Yılmaz in Galatasaray, but I would put Yunus Akgün at the top. He has a Maradona effect in Galatasaray. The assists he makes and the goals he scores are incredible," he said.
"If Yunus Akgün continues his football style, Galatasaray will never need Kerem Aktürkoğlu. His help to the defense is also very valuable."
Osimhen and Akgun are two of Galatasaray's best players with 28 goal involvements recorded between them so far this season.
Okan Buruk will need the duo to be fit and maintain their current form to aid his ambition of winning the Super Lig for the third consecutive campaign and achieve his other objectives for the season.
