'The trophy went to Lookman' - Hakimi's mother spills the beans on what PSG star told her before CAF Awards
Published: December 21, 2024
Saida Mouh, the mother of Paris Saint-Germain fullback Achraf Hakimi, has shared what her son told her before losing the African Men's Player of the Year award to Ademola Lookman.
Lookman not only beat Morocco's captain to the award at the gala event held in Marrakech, Morocco, on Monday, but also overcame Serhou Guirassy, Ronwen Williams and Simon Adingra.
Hakimi played well for PSG last season, registering five goals and seven assists in 40 appearances across all competitions and won the Ligue 1 as well as the Coupe de France.
The 26-year-old has also continued to impress for the French side this season, notching three goals and seven assists in 20 games.
The right-back has equally been impressive for Morocco, featuring in five games at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, registering one goal and one assist.
He participated at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, where he performed excellently yet again, mustering two goal involvements in the competition.
This led to optimism that he could win the African Player of the Year award, and some reports had it that he was the winner.
Pained by Hakimi missing out on the prestigious award, Mouh revealed that her son had told her that he was the winner, informing her decision to attend the award ceremony.
"My son asked me to come urgently to Marrakech to be present at the CAF Awards ceremony," she told Al-Araby via Fennec Football.
"He spoke with such certainty that he was the winner. Maybe he had been informed before the event, but in the end, the trophy went to Ademola Lookman."
Hakimi will be in contention for the next edition of the award if he continues with his present form, but not many could argue that Lookman was an unworthy winner for this year's edition.
