Transfer reporter claims Dessers is open to leaving Rangers as forward is offered to Monza
Published: January 23, 2025
Italian Serie A club Monza have reportedly emerged as the latest team linked with Cyriel Dessers during the winter transfer window, following the Nigerian striker's growing frustration over his lack of playing time at Rangers.
Dessers, who netted a hat-trick in a Scottish Cup tie against Fraserburgh earlier this season, has been benched for the last five league matches, with his place in the starting lineup now occupied by Hamza Igamane.
The Moroccan forward has been in excellent form, which has pushed Dessers further down the pecking order at the Glasgow club.
Dessers' struggle for regular minutes at Rangers has raised questions about his future in Scotland, and reports have linked him to several clubs across Europe, including sides in France, Spain, and Italy.
Among the suitors are Saint-Etienne, Cagliari, Empoli, and Leganes. Italian journalist Nicolo Schira has now revealed that Monza are also keen on acquiring the Super Eagles forward.
In a post on X, Schira confirmed that Dessers is open to leaving Rangers this winter and has already been offered to Monza, who currently sit at the bottom of Serie A.
A potential move back to Italy, where Dessers previously played for Cremonese before his switch to Rangers, could offer the striker the consistent playing time he craves.
This would also bolster his chances of featuring prominently for Nigeria in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers, set to begin in March.
The Super Eagles face tough competition in Group C, with Rwanda and Zimbabwe standing in the way of Nigeria’s qualification hopes.
Nigeria currently sits fifth in the group, having earned just three points from their first four matches, four points behind leaders Rwanda and South Africa.
A successful move to Monza could prove pivotal for Dessers as he looks to secure a spot in the squad under new manager Eric Chelle.
