Leicester City pull out of race to sign Sunderland, Lille and Fiorentina target Chuba Akpom
Published: January 30, 2025
English Premier League side Leicester City have withdrawn their interest in signing Chuba Akpom from Ajax Amsterdam, leaving the Nigerian striker to consider offers from Fiorentina, Lille and Sunderland.
According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, The Foxes were keen on bringing Akpom to the King Power Stadium, but the now appear to have ended their pursuit.
Akpom, who has been struggling to establish himself as a regular starter at Ajax, is now likely to be loaned out to one of the interested clubs with an option to buy.
The 29-year-old has been one of the top earners at Ajax, but the Dutch giants are eager to remove him from their wage bill.
The Super Eagles hopeful has had a mixed spell at Ajax since joining from Middlesbrough in 2023.
Despite scoring 23 goals and providing four assists in 67 appearances, Akpom has failed to secure a starting place in the team.
As a result, Ajax are willing to listen to offers for the former England youth international.
Sunderland had expressed interest in signing Akpom on loan, but the striker was not keen on joining the Championship promotion hopefuls.
Akpom's situation at Ajax has been further complicated by the club's desire to keep Netherlands international Brian Brobbey, who is on West Ham United's wishlist.
Ajax would rather see Akpom leave the club than lose Brobbey, who has been in impressive form this season.
