Massive blow for Super Eagles as 41-cap defender is ruled out of 2026 WCQs in March
Published: February 27, 2025
West Brom defender Semi Ajayi is set to miss Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March after suffering a hamstring injury.
The experienced center-back was forced off in the first half of West Brom’s 2-0 victory over Oxford United and will be sidelined for several weeks.
The injury, which occurred in the 41st minute of the match at The Hawthorns, has come as a significant setback for both Ajayi’s club and country.
Following an assessment, West Brom confirmed through the official website that the 31-year-old will undergo a rehabilitation program and hopes to return before the end of the season.
"Albion can confirm Semi Ajayi will be sidelined for several weeks after suffering a hamstring injury," the club announced.
"He will now enter a period of rehabilitation and will target a return before the season’s conclusion. Everyone at the club wishes Semi a speedy recovery."
Ajayi’s absence is a major blow to Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign, with the Super Eagles set to resume their Group C fixtures in March.
The team has struggled in the qualifiers so far, collecting just three points from four matches and sitting behind Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin.
Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle will now have to make defensive adjustments ahead of their crucial fixtures against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, as they seek to revive their World Cup hopes.
Ajayi, who has earned 41 caps for Nigeria since making his debut in 2018, has been a key figure in the national team’s defense.
His leadership and experience will be missed as the Super Eagles look to improve their standing in the group.
For West Brom, Ajayi’s injury also poses a challenge as they continue their push for promotion in the Championship.
The Baggies will now have to cope without one of their most experienced defenders during a crucial period in their campaign.
