'Not concerned about history books' - Rwanda CB fires warning to Super Eagles ahead of showdown in Kigali
Published: March 21, 2025
Rwanda's central defender, Ange Mutsinzi, has issued a firm challenge to the Super Eagles of Nigeria ahead of their World Cup qualifying showdown later this evening at the Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali.
Despite Nigeria's long-standing football legacy, Mutsinzi made it clear that Rwanda is not intimidated by historical precedents.
"We are certainly not concerned about history books and what has happened before. Qualification for the FIFA World Cup is our priority,” Mutsinzi stated as quoted by The New Times.
His remarks come as Rwanda looks to continue its impressive form in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Amavubi have never participated in a World Cup finals, but under the guidance of Algerian coach Adel Amrouche, the team has emerged as a formidable force in Group C.
With seven points from four matches, Rwanda are sitting second in the group. Mutsinzi expressed confidence that his side can secure a vital victory against Nigeria, especially with the crucial three points on offer.
"We need to defend well if we want to get points. Every game starts with better defending, so we must be ready and give 100 percent because the three points can move us to nine points, which would be very good for us,” Mutsinzi added.
Rwanda’s journey through the qualifiers has been a mixture of highs and lows.
A narrow 1-0 loss to Benin last June was a setback, but the Amavubi quickly bounced back with a crucial 1-0 away win over Lesotho.
This result has positioned them in a promising place ahead of their home fixtures against the continent’s heavyweights, including Nigeria.
With Nigeria currently in fifth place in the group, a victory is crucial for the Super Eagles, who are struggling with just three points from their opening four matches.
The pressure is mounting on the Nigerian side, and the new coach Eric Chelle will need to inspire his team to deliver a strong performance in Kigali.
With both teams aware of the significance of the upcoming clash, the stakes could not be higher as the Amavubi dare to dream in their quest for World Cup qualification.
