'Prank' - NFF dismiss reports of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle considering contract termination
Published: April 02, 2025
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has strongly denied recent speculation suggesting that Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, is contemplating terminating his contract.
The claim was made following a report from Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, which cited uncertainty surrounding Nigeria's World Cup qualification as the possible reason for Chelle's alleged decision.
Obayiuwana revealed: "Eric Chelle is considering terminating his contract as Super Eagles manager. Sources within the NFF say that uncertainty over his fate beyond the FIFA World Cup qualifying series has led to a dramatic change of heart. The NFF will hold a crisis meeting to address the matter."
Nigeria, currently sitting fourth in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with just seven points from six matches, is at risk of missing out on qualification.
Meanwhile, South Africa leads the group with 13 points, while Rwanda and Benin Republic follow in second and third with eight points each.
The pressure is mounting on Coach Chelle to secure a World Cup berth for the country.
The report, which gained significant attention, claimed that Chelle had recently traveled to Europe to scout potential new players and that he was planning to hold a crisis meeting with the NFF over his future.
However, in a chat with allnigeriasoccer.com, Ademola Olajire, the NFF's Head of Communication, dismissed the report as an April Fool's prank.
Olajire clarified, "This is April Fool prank by Osasu Obayiuwana," effectively putting to rest the rumours surrounding Chelle's tenure.
The NFF's swift denial has reassured fans that Chelle will continue in his role as head coach, with a clear focus on securing Nigeria's qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
