'I almost scored' - Arokodare reflects on Nigeria home debut, delighted dad saw him play at high level

Tolu Arokodare has shared his excitement about making his home debut for the Super Eagles during their recent 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Zimbabwe's Warriors in Uyo.

There was an important guest at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium as Tolu's dad watched him play at a high level for the first time in his professional career. 

With Nigeria desperately looking to break the deadlock, manager Eric Chelle made a tactical substitution, taking off Samuel Chukwueze just before the hour mark and introducing Arokdare.

The Racing Genk marksman looked lively after coming off the bench and came close to scoring his first international goal on multiple occasions. 

With sixteen minutes remaining in the game, Victor Osimhen opened the scoring with a header, but the Super Eagles failed to hold onto their lead as the Warriors equalized in stoppage time.

Arokodare played a role in Nigeria's goal by passing the ball to Ola Aina, who delivered the cross that Victor Osimhen finished. 

Speaking to Racing Genk's YouTube channel, Arokodare shared the deep emotions of representing his country and highlighted the occasion's significance for his family, especially his father.

Reflecting on his performance, the 24-year-old recalled how close he came to scoring on his home debut and the invaluable experience of training alongside seasoned professionals.

"It's what every footballer wants, represent their country. I said I have no words, I was very overwhelmed by the moment," Arokodare stated.

"I was very happy for my dad because I know it meant a lot to him. I was also happy he could come to watch me play for the first time ever.

"Professionally, he watched me in Nigeria and I almost scored. We didn't win but I got to train with people that I look up to - people I see on Instagram, social media, Snapchat, watch in the Premier League.

"I got to train with them and I saw the mentality. It was different, it was a good experience."

With 18 goals to his name in 31 matches, Arokodare is the leading scorer in the Jupiler Pro League.
