'Osimhen can score 100 goals' - Martins warns Super Eagles individual brilliance won't bring success

Former Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins has called for greater cohesion in the Nigerian national team, warning that individual brilliance from star players like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman is not enough to bring lasting success.
Speaking in an interview with Football Fans Tribe, Martins said the Super Eagles lack the collective spirit that once made the team formidable.
"At that time, we had a team," Martins said, reflecting on his playing days. "But now, the team is not actually there. The names are there, but the team is not there."
He highlighted the efforts of the team’s current stars but insisted that without unity, their performances won’t yield results.
"Osimhen as a striker is doing his, Lookman is doing his, you know, but we need a collective team effort to play together and win together.
"Osimhen can score 100 goals, and if you don’t go anywhere, it’s like the goals are nothing.”
Martins’ comments come as Ademola Lookman, recently crowned African Footballer of the Year, continues to shine for Atalanta, while Osimhen remains one of the most prolific strikers in Europe.
However, Martins believes individual quality alone is not enough.
His remarks echo growing concerns among fans and former internationals who believe the Super Eagles must rediscover a stronger tactical identity and team spirit ahead of the resumption of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
