Kion Etete: Striker open to playing for Nigeria returns to Cardiff City after Bolton loan
Published: May 07, 2025
With a statement on the club's official website, Bolton wanderers have announced their retained and released list following the conclusion of the 2024-2025 season.
Derby-born Nigerian striker Kion Etete will not be signed on a full deal, with Bolton Wanderers confirming that he has returned to parent club Cardiff City following the conclusion of the League One season last weekend.
In search of adequate playing opportunities after recovering from a hamstring injury, Etete joined Bolton Wanderers in the January transfer window.
The 23-year-old played five games for Bolton, coming off the bench on each occasion in the League One.
Etete signed a two-year contract extension that runs until 2027, before completing his move to Bolton Wanderers on January 31.
Since his arrival at Cardiff City from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in 2022, Etete has made 63 appearances for the Bluebirds, scoring nine goals.
The dual-national player is eligible to represent Nigeria through his father and previously told allnigeriasoccer.com that it would be an honor to play for the Nigerian national teams.
He was reportedly on the radar of the Nigeria Football Federation while at Tottenham Hotspur.
Meanwhile, David Abimbola, a member of Bolton Wanderers double-winning youth team has been retained.
A striker by trade, Abimbola made four first team appearances for Bolton in the recently concluded season.
