Nigeria 0 Senegal 0 (3-1 after pens): Harcourt the hero as Flying Eagles qualify for U20 World Cup

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles secured a dramatic 3-1 penalty shootout victory over Senegal to reach the semifinals of the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and clinch a coveted ticket to the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

The quarterfinal clash at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia ended goalless after 120 tense minutes, with both sides failing to convert their few chances.

In a contest that rarely produced clear-cut opportunities, Nigeria looked the more energetic in extra time, but failed to capitalize on their momentum.

Senegal, the defending champions, also came close but were denied by strong defending and outstanding goalkeeping.

The Flying Eagles, managed by Aliyu Zubairu, fielded a starting eleven led by captain Daniel Bameyi and anchored in midfield by Divine Oliseh and Sulyman Alabi.

Despite dominating possession at stretches, Nigeria could not find a breakthrough, as Senegal’s backline stood firm and goalkeeper Mouhamed Sissokho delivered several key saves.

As the game headed into penalties, Nigeria’s nerves held strong. Precious Benjamin, Israel Ayuma, and Emmanuel Chukwu all converted from the spot, while Nigeria’s goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt emerged the hero, saving two penalties and watching one crash against the crossbar.

Senegal’s Taly Dia and Dorival failed to convert, with Harcourt making superb stops to preserve Nigeria’s lead. Diouck scored Senegal’s only successful kick, but it was not enough.

The win sends Nigeria into the semifinals of the U-20 AFCON and secures their place at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, a major milestone for the seven-time African champions.

It marks a return to the world stage after missing out on the 2023 edition.

It was a hard-fought contest that tested the Flying Eagles’ resolve, but they held their nerve when it mattered most. Zubairu's side will now shift focus to the semifinal clash, with confidence riding high after knocking out the reigning champions.
