From doubt to decisive: Lookman inspires Atalanta to 2-1 win v Roma, nets 20th of the season
Published: May 12, 2025
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman was on target again as Atalanta claimed a vital 2-1 victory over AS Roma on Monday evening at the Gewiss Stadium to earn a UEFA Champions League spot.
Lookman, who was initially a doubt for the clash due to a minor injury, wasted no time making an impact, opening the scoring in the 9th minute.
The Nigerian international received a pass from Charles De Ketelaere, turned sharply inside the box, and slotted a precise finish into the bottom corner to give the hosts an early lead.
The goal marks a continuation of Lookman’s return to form, having recently ended a six-game goal drought with a strike against Monza.
His tally now stands at 20 goals and seven assists in 39 appearances across all competitions this season.
Despite growing speculation about a potential summer move away from the Bergamo-based club, Lookman remains focused on finishing the season strongly.
His recent resurgence could prove crucial as Atalanta seek to secure a top-four finish in Serie A.
However, Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle will also be buoyed by Lookman’s form ahead of the restart of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Lookman’s sharpness in front of goal could provide Nigeria with a vital edge as she hopes to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in USA, Mexico, and Canada.
