U20 Afcon: Three tactical tweaks Flying Eagles coach must make to beat South Africa
Published: May 14, 2025
As Nigeria’s Flying Eagles prepare for a high-stakes U-20 AFCON semifinal clash with South Africa’s Amajita, head coach Aliyu Zubairu must rethink his approach to ensure progress to the final.
After a tense penalty shootout win over Senegal, there are clear areas in need of tactical fine-tuning ahead of Thursday’s showdown.
1. Introduce More Vertical Penetration in Attack
While Nigeria showed grit and composure to eliminate defending champions Senegal, their lack of cutting edge in the final third remains a concern.
The Flying Eagles struggled to create clear chances, often recycling possession without meaningful penetration.
Against a South African side that thrives on compact defending, Zubairu must instruct his midfielders to make more vertical runs and play early passes into the channels.
A more direct approach, with runners exploiting the space behind the Amajita backline, could prove decisive.
2. Improve Wing Play and Overlaps
South Africa’s narrow shape will likely allow space on the flanks, and Nigeria must capitalise on that.
The fullbacks were largely reserved against Senegal, contributing little in attack.
Zubairu should encourage his wide defenders to support wingers by providing overlaps, thereby stretching the opposition and creating crossing opportunities.
This could open up chances for strikers to exploit aerially or for midfielders arriving late into the box.
3. Press Higher and Quicker in Transition
South Africa rely heavily on structured build-up play, and disrupting that rhythm could tilt the contest in Nigeria’s favour.
The Flying Eagles sat deep for long spells against Senegal, but a more aggressive press—especially in the middle and attacking thirds—can force turnovers in dangerous positions.
Quick transitions, led by dynamic players like Daniel Daga or Ibrahim Mohammed, will be essential in punishing any lapses in South Africa’s setup.
Nigeria go into this clash as the most successful team in the competition’s history, and Zubairu has a squad full of talent and ambition.
But to reach the final and extend their pursuit of an eighth title, strategic refinement is essential.
If the Flying Eagles can implement these key adjustments, they will be well placed to avenge their 2019 penalty loss to the Amajita and secure a place in the U-20 AFCON final.
