'We've studied South Africa well' – Flying Eagles coach Zubairu backs team to outplay physical Amajita
Published: May 15, 2025
Nigeria U20 head coach Aliyu Zubairu has expressed strong confidence ahead of his team’s crucial semi-final clash against South Africa in the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Zubairu emphasized that his Flying Eagles have carefully studied their opponents and are ready to rise to the challenge.
"We’ve studied South Africa well,” Zubairu said, according to the official website of CAF.
"I watched their game against DR Congo. They’re physical, well-organised and dangerous on the counter—but we believe we have what it takes to win."
South Africa’s Amajita have impressed with their resilience and tactical discipline, qualities that Zubairu fully acknowledges.
Despite this, he remains focused on his own team’s strengths and ambitions.
"We respect South Africa, but we’re focused on our own game. The goal is the final. We’ve been here many times. The players know what’s at stake,” he added.
The Flying Eagles have shown steady progress throughout the tournament, something their coach is keen to highlight.
"You can see the improvement in every match,” Zubairu noted.
Nigeria’s performances have grown more assured as the tournament has progressed, helping them build momentum at a critical stage.
However, the coach admitted that finishing in front of goal remains an area for improvement.
"We’ve worked on our finishing. We created chances, especially against Kenya and Senegal. We just need that final touch,” he said, signaling his intent to sharpen the team’s attacking edge ahead of the semi-final.
Nigeria and South Africa will face off with the winner advancing to the final and a chance to lift the continental trophy.
Zubairu’s confidence in his players is clear, as he believes the Flying Eagles have the skill, discipline, and determination to overcome their physical opponents and take another step toward U-20 AFCON glory.
