Achilles tendon trouble behind him: Super Eagles forward Lookman cleared for Genoa v Atalanta
Published: May 17, 2025
Ademola Lookman has received the medical green light to take to the pitch on Saturday evening when Atalanta lock horns with Genoa in a Serie A clash at Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genoa.
The reigning African Footballer of the Year had been rated as doubtful for the trip to Genoa after spending much of the week battling Achilles tendon inflammation.
Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini has named twenty-three players in the travelling squad, with his marquee forward Lookman part of the group.
Whether the Italian coach will gamble on Lookman in the starting lineup or choose Daniel Maldini is still uncertain.
Lookman also had fitness problems before the Nerazzurri's last match in the Italian top-flight, but was named in the starting lineup for the UEFA Champions League decider against AS Roma.
And it paid off, with the Nigerian star inspiring Atalanta to a 2-1 win that confirmed their place in next season's Champions League.
Lookman took his tally for the season to twenty goals in all competitions after opening the scoring inside nine minutes.
It could be his last away match for Atalanta, given that he has been heavily linked with a departure from the 2024 Europa League winners in the summer transfer window, even though he has two years left on his contract.
Clubs in Spain, England and Italy are monitoring the situation of the 2017 Fifa U20 World Cup winner.
