Super Eagles newcomer Igho Ogbu expressed immense pride and gratitude following Nigeria’s hard-fought 2-1 win against Ghana in the Unity Cup game on Wednesday.
The match marked a significant milestone in Ogbu’s career as he made his senior national team debut.
Speaking after the game, Ogbu described the experience as, "It's an amazing feeling, you know, to play for your motherland."
He emphasized the deep emotional connection that comes with representing Nigeria at the highest level.
"I think that's the pride of every young kid that plays football out there, you know, to be able to represent Nigeria. I think it's the best feeling ever."
The young defender was quick to acknowledge the significance of the moment, expressing his heartfelt gratitude.
"And for me, I think uh I'm grateful to God for it."
Despite the personal milestone of earning his first cap, Ogbu explained that his focus remains on the bigger picture rather than individual accolades.
He said: "For me, I don't think about the caps now at the moment. I just think about every moment because I'm a Nigerian and we're here to represent Nigeria."
He went on to share how every opportunity to wear the national jersey is cherished.
"So every time I get the opportunity it will be it will be something that I will be happy and proud to represent the country," he added.
Ogbu also reflected on the influence of his senior teammates, particularly the defensive stalwarts whose style and dedication inspire the next generation.
He also paid tribute to the senior defenders who have inspired his journey.
"There are a lot of players—the kind of playing that they play, they are tough defenders. I watch these guys and I’m very proud when I see them,” he said.
"Taribo West's videos are amazing. When you watch them, you see the passion. That’s what drives us, those of us coming through.
"I’m really happy to know them and what they’ve brought to football—not just to football, but to Nigeria as a whole."
Ogbu’s debut and inspiring words highlight the passion and dedication fueling the new generation of Nigerian footballers eager to build on the legacy of those before them, continuing the proud tradition of the Super Eagles.
