'The good part' - Frank Onyeka credits first half blitz for Super Eagles win over Black Stars
Published: May 29, 2025
Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has said Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Ghana in Wednesday’s Unity Cup clash was treated with the seriousness of a competitive fixture, given the long-standing rivalry between the two nations.
The match, played at the Gtech Community Stadium in London, saw Nigeria dominate the first half and hold on in the second to claim a narrow but significant victory.
"If you know Nigeria against Ghana, it’s always a rivalry,” Onyeka told the Super Eagles media team after the game.
"So for us, we took that game not like a friendly but more seriously because we don’t want to lose against Ghana.
"We know the big rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana. So for us, we went into that game to win."
Nigeria got off to a strong start, scoring two goals before halftime.
Onyeka, who plays his club football in England with Brentford, praised the team’s sharpness in the opening period and their resilience as the game wore on.
"The good part was that we took advantage of the first half and scored two goals,” he said.
"Though the second half was not the best, we held them until they scored to make it 2-1. But I mean, we’re happy that we won the game."
Onyeka will now look to help the Super Eagles secure the Unity Cup title when they face Jamaica in the final on Saturday at the Gtech Community Stadium.
