Caught on cam: Award-winning Brentford CB trains with mentor Moses Simon before Jamaica v Nigeria
Published: May 30, 2025
Nigerian international Moses Simon was joined by his protege, Benjamin Fredrick, during Super Eagles training in London ahead of Saturday’s Unity Cup final against Jamaica.
Fredrick, an 20-year-old centre-back who plays for the development squad of English Premier League side Brentford, is a graduate of the Simoiben Football Academy—founded by Simon in Kaduna.
The moment marked a proud reunion between mentor and protégé, underscoring the long-term vision and success of Simon’s grassroots development initiative.
The duo were pictured training together for the first time in the national team setup as Nigeria prepared for their high-profile Unity Cup final against Jamaica at the GTECH Community Stadium in London.
Fredrick’s inclusion in the Super Eagles squad follows a breakout season in which he was named Brentford U21s Players' Player of the Year, a recognition of his standout performances and professionalism.
Fredrick’s rise has been remarkable, progressing from youth football in Nigeria to starring at the 2023 Fifa U20 World Cup and now establishing himself at club level in England.
His journey reflects the growing impact of privately-run football academies in Nigeria.
The Unity Cup match serves as a platform for the Super Eagles to engage fans in the diaspora and test emerging talents ahead of upcoming 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.
For Moses Simon, it is not just a friendly game—it is the fulfilment of a dream to see a player he helped develop now invited to train with the Super Eagles.
