Former Three Lions forward holds talks with NFF in London after pledging future to Super Eagles
Published: May 30, 2025
Allnigeriasoccer.com can report with certainty that there is no going back on former Three Lions forward Dapo Afolayan’s decision to commit his international future to three-time African champions, Nigeria.
Born in London, the St. Pauli forward previously featured for England’s C team—a squad comprising non-league players—but remains eligible to represent Nigeria in competitive fixtures without requiring a change of association.
Although Afolayan made himself available for selection in Nigeria's ongoing Unity Cup campaign in London, he was left out of coach Eric Chelle's squad for the tournament and next week's friendly versus Russia in Moscow.
The player was disappointed by the omission but he has since moved on positively.
This week, Afolayan visited the Super Eagles at their team hotel in London, where he met with players and coaching staff, strengthening ties with the national team setup.
The visit was followed by a meeting with Nigeria Football Federation officials, facilitated by NFF First Vice President Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu.
Discussions reportedly focused on future call-ups to the senior national team.
Afolayan is aiming to emulate the likes of Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi and Ola Aina, who represented the England teams, before playing cap-tying games for the Super Eagles.
Last season, the 27-year-old scored three goals and provided two assists in 32 appearances in the German Bundesliga.
