Confirmed: Midfielder eligible for Germany, Nigeria signs new Bayer Leverkusen ahead of loan move
Published: June 03, 2025
Through a statement on the official website, German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed that dual-national midfielder Francis Onyeka has signed a new contract.
Born in Gummersbach, Onyeka has caps for his country of birth, Germany at U15, U16, U17 and U18 level, but remains eligible to wear Nigeria's colours through his father.
The new agreement would keep him at Bayer Leverkusen until the end of the 2027-2028 season.
He is set to spend the full 2025–2026 campaign on loan at second-tier side VfL Bochum in search of regular minutes in men's football.
Onyeka earned nineteen first-team call-ups last season, making his senior debut in both the UEFA Champions League and the DFB-Pokal.
He recently featured in the final of the German U19 Championship with Bayer Leverkusen, scoring a goal while wearing the captain’s armband.
In October 2024, Onyeka was awarded the most prestigious individual award in German youth football by the German Football Association , the Fritz Walter Medal, following his exceptional performances and commitment to Germany youth team.
Onyeka is already familiar with the Vonovia Ruhrstadion, having been an unused substitute in Bayer Leverkusen’s 1-1 draw against Bochum in November 2024.
The 18-year-old played for SC Borussia Lindenthal-Hohenlind before he was snapped up by Leverkusen in 2014.
