'We've got the two best African players ' - Wilfred Ndidi says talent is not Super Eagles problem
Published: June 05, 2025
Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has expressed strong belief in the quality of Nigeria’s national team, highlighting the exceptional talent within the squad, particularly the presence of two of Africa’s finest players.
Although Ndidi did not explicitly name the players he referred to as the ‘two best African players’ in the Super Eagles squad, it is widely believed he was alluding to Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
Both forwards have enjoyed stellar form in recent seasons, with Osimhen crowned African Footballer of the Year in 2023 and Lookman recently emerging as Africa's best player following his standout performances for both club and country.
Despite boasting a wealth of talent, the Super Eagles have struggled to translate individual brilliance into collective success.
Nigeria have not lifted the Africa Cup of Nations since their triumph in 2013 and failed to qualify for the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar.
Their road to the 2026 World Cup is also under threat as the team currently trails Group C leaders South Africa by six points, with just four qualifying matches left to play.
The pressure is mounting on the squad to deliver, with fans and pundits alike calling for greater cohesion and consistency on the pitch.
"We are going places, we've got great talents in the team like the two best African players," Wilfred Ndidi told Proudly Austin.
"We've got a great team and great players. We just need to do more as a team instead of individually. We just need to stick together and do more as a team."
As Nigeria prepare for the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers, Ndidi has stressed that talent won't be enough and the Super Eagles must play as a team.
