No going back: Super Eagles defender joins Hamburg subject to medical
Published: June 10, 2025
Hamburger SV have secured a major coup in the transfer market, with Nigerian centre-back Jordan Torunarigha poised to join the club on a free transfer, subject to a medical scheduled for this week.
The 27-year-old defender, whose contract with Belgian side KAA Gent recently expired, has reached a full agreement with the newly promoted Bundesliga outfit, marking a significant step in his career.
This development was exclusively revealed by Sky Sport reporter Florian Plettenberg on X, highlighting the done deal and the impending medical.
Torunarigha, a former German youth international who switched allegiance to represent Nigeria in 2023, attracted serious interest from several clubs, including RSC Anderlecht, Olympique Marseille, and FC Köln.
However, HSV’s sporting director Stefan Kuntz and head coach Steffen Baumgart played a pivotal role in convincing the towering defender to return to Germany.
The 1.91m centre-back brings a wealth of experience, having made 73 Bundesliga appearances for Hertha BSC before his 2022 move to Gent, where he featured in 145 matches, scoring four goals.
His defensive prowess, speed, and ability to play out from the back make him a valuable addition to HSV as they prepare for their Bundesliga return.
Kuntz, who coached Torunarigha during his time with Germany’s U21 and Olympic teams, leveraged their prior connection to seal the deal.
With his medical set to take place this week, HSV fans are eager to see Torunarigha bolster their backline.
This imminent signing signals the club’s ambition to establish stability and compete effectively in the top flight.
