Chelsea -owned player targeted by Eric Chelle named in Borussia Dortmund squad for CWC
Published: June 10, 2025
Borussia Dortmund have announced their squad for the 2025 Fifa Club World Cup, with a Nigeria-eligible player, Carney Chukwuemeka, part of the group.
The 21-year-old is among the dual-national players being tracked by Nigeria coach Eric Chelle before the resumption of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Chelle is expected to run the rule over the England youth international during the Club World Cup in the United States (June 15 to July 13).
Chukwuemeka joined Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea during the winter transfer window and is under contract with the Bundesliga side until June 30, 2025.
However, to remain eligible for Borussia Dortmund through the end of the tournament, he would need to sign a short-term contract until mid-July.
As it stands, Borussia Dortmund have yet to activate the €35 million purchase option included in Chukwuemeka's loan deal.
In the second half of last season, he made 13 appearances out of a possible 20 across all competitions, scoring once.
Cap-tied Germany internationals of Nigerian descent Felix Nmecha and Karim Adeyemi have also been included in Dortmund's squad to the United States, where they will be preparing for the tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Borussia Dortmund will kick off their Club World Cup campaign against Fluminense on June 17 in New Jersey, before facing Mamelodi Sundowns on June 21 and Ulsan HD on June 25.
