Mikel Arteta's Arsenal make statement on Osimhen with first bid for Sporting goal machine Gyokeres
Published: June 13, 2025
Arsenal have made a decisive move in the transfer market, submitting an initial bid for Sporting CP’s prolific striker Viktor Gyokeres, effectively quelling rumors of a potential big-money pursuit of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.
The offer, confirmed by A Bola on Thursday, marks a significant shift in the Gunners’ transfer strategy under manager Mikel Arteta, as they prioritize the Swedish goal machine over the Nigerian superstar.
Arsenal’s proposal for Gyokeres was valued at €55 million, with an additional €10 million in performance-related add-ons.
However, Sporting CP swiftly rejected the bid, which fell short of club president Frederico Varandas's valuation of the prolific striker.
Despite the rejection, Arsenal’s interest in Gyokeres signals their intent to bolster their attacking options with a proven goalscorer, effectively cooling speculation that had linked them with a high-profile move for Osimhen.
Osimhen, who enjoyed a sensational loan spell at Galatasaray, netted an outstanding 37 goals in all competitions, has attracted interest from several European giants, with Arsenal previously rumored to be among the contenders for his signature.
However, the Gunners’ concrete approach for Gyokeres suggests a strategic pivot, likely driven by financial considerations and Mikel Arteta’s preference for a player whose profile aligns with Arsenal’s tactical setup.
Gyokeres, known for his physicality, work rate, and clinical finishing, has been a revelation at Sporting, making him a prime target for the North London club.
As per the report, Arsenal are not deterred by Sporting’s rejection and are preparing to return with an improved offer in the coming days.
For Osimhen, Arsenal’s focus on Gyokeres may open the door for other suitors, with the likes of Juventus and Chelsea credited with an interest in the former African Footballer of the Year.
