Expert cautions Galatasaray: Teams are reluctant to sign Afcon-bound players like Osimhen
Published: June 18, 2025
Turkish football expert Devrim Zengi has warned that Victor Osimhen could miss several key fixtures next season if he joins Galatasaray, due to his potential participation in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking on the Super Lig champions' transfer plans, Zengi noted that the striker is likely to be called up by the Nigeria national team for the month-long tournament, which could see him absent for four to five matches during a critical period of the campaign.
With Galatasaray aiming to retain their domestic crown and make an impact in Europe, the timing of Osimhen's possible unavailability could present a significant challenge for manager Okan Buruk.
After a successful loan spell in which he tallied 37 goals in all competitions, Galatasaray are keen to retain the services of the Napoli-owned player but face competition from Al-Hilal, Juventus as well as English Premier League clubs.
"This year, there is a one-month African Cup. Victor Osimhen may also play there. That's why he may miss 4-5 matches," Zengi was quoted as saying by habersarikirmizi.com.
"Some teams are staying away from the players who will go to the African Cup for this reason.
"However, it seems like Osimhen will stay at Galatasaray. It will be clear in a few days."
Despite interest from several European clubs, Zengi noted that Galatasaray remain optimistic about retaining the Super Eagles star, with the Turkish champions' lucrative financial package believed to surpass all competing offers.
"No matter how much the European teams offer, they cannot reach Galatasaray's salary offer.
"He has already completely closed the door to Saudi Arabia. His family does not want that place either."
Osimhen, who helped Nigeria to a silver medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, is expected to be part of the Super Eagles squad heading to Morocco for the 2025 tournament, fitness permitting.
