Here we go: Soon-to-be 37yo Super Eagles CB agrees deal with Aris Limassol ahead of Rangers exit
Published: June 20, 2025
Veteran Nigerian defender Leon Balogun has reached an agreement to join Cypriot First Division side Aris Limassol on a one-year deal.
Balogun will complete his move to AEL Limassol on July 1, after the expiration of his contract with Rangers FC, the Cypriot club officially announced on Friday.
The soon-to-be 37-year-old centre-back, born on June 28, 1988, brings a wealth of experience to the Cypriot outfit, having enjoyed a career that has spanned the German Bundesliga, the English Premier League, and the Scottish Premiership.
Born in Berlin, Balogun began his football journey at Hertha BSC before making his Bundesliga debut with Hannover 96 in the 2008–09 season.
His career in Germany included spells at Werder Bremen, Fortuna Düsseldorf, SV Darmstadt, and Mainz 05, where he accumulated 75 top-flight appearances and one goal.
In 2018, Balogun made the leap to the English Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion.
He featured 12 times for the Seagulls scoring once, before joining Wigan Athletic on loan the following season.
The cente-back moved to Rangers in 2020 and quickly became a key figure in their defence, helping the Scottish giants to a league title, a Scottish Cup, and a League Cup.
A brief stint at Queens Park Rangers in the English Championship followed before he returned to Rangers in 2023 for a second spell.
Across his two tenures at Ibrox, Balogun amassed 114 appearances, scoring three goals and providing four assists.
On the international level, Balogun has earned 46 caps for Nigeria and scored one goal.
He was part of the Super Eagles squad that competed at the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia and helped Nigeria finish third at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
