No formal offers: Real Sociedad instruct Sadiq to report for pre-season training
Published: June 26, 2025
Real Sociedad have made a surprise reversal regarding Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq, who has now been instructed to return for pre-season training on July 7 despite previously being told he was not in the club’s plans.
Just weeks ago, local outlet Deportes Cope Gipuzkoa reported that Sadiq and his representatives had been informed of the club’s desire to offload him ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
The intention was for the 28-year-old forward to secure a new club before the start of preseason to avoid returning to Zubieta, the club’s training ground.
However, with no formal offers materializing, Real Sociedad have shifted their stance.
According to AS, via Estadio Deportivo, the club has contacted Sadiq, who is currently vacationing in Kaduna, Nigeria, to confirm that he must report to pre-season.
Sadiq is still not part of head coach Sergio Francisco’s long-term plans, but the club risks legal complications if it excludes a contracted player without a valid sporting reason.
Sadiq, whose contract runs until 2028, is not the only player returning despite being deemed surplus to requirements.
Carlos Fernández, who was loaned to Cádiz last season, and Dutch forward Sheraldo Becker are also expected at training.
While Real Sociedad would prefer to part ways with all three, no concrete proposals have arrived.
The club had hoped to generate around €10 million from Sadiq’s sale, with some interest from Saudi Arabia reportedly floated.
However, the player’s preference remains a move within Europe. As a result, a loan deal is now seen as the most likely outcome if no buyers emerge in the summer window.
Until then, Sadiq will wear the Real Sociedad shirt once more—at least in training.
