Atalanta favour move abroad: Romano reveals Inter must pay more for Lookman than PL clubs, Atletico
Published: July 17, 2025
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Inter Milan are intensifying their pursuit of Ademola Lookman, with the Serie A giants preparing a substantial bid to convince Atalanta and the player of their commitment.
The transfer expert corroborated Corriere dello Sport's report that Inter have made a move for the reigning African Footballer of the Year.
Lookman has been a standout performer for Atalanta since joining from RB Leipzig in 2022.
His prolific 2024/25 season, where he scored 15 goals and provided five assists in Serie A, helped Atalanta secure a third-place finish and Champions League qualification.
His versatility across the front line and relentless work rate have made him a coveted asset
"Atletico Madrid are also keeping an eye on Lookman. They need a forward, but they can’t close a deal unless they sell someone first," Romano said on his YouTube channel.
"Still, it’s clear Atalanta would favour a solution that involves a move abroad."
According to Romano, and fellow transfer reporter Matteo Moretto, Atalanta have placed a €40 million price tag on Lookman if the transfer involves a club outside Italy.
However, Serie A sides, particularly Inter, are being quoted a higher fee, as Atalanta prefer not to strengthen a domestic rival.
Inter are reportedly preparing an initial bid in the region of €40 million to show both Atalanta and Lookman that they are serious about completing the transfer.
Romano revealed that Inter's sporting director, Piero Ausilio, held positive talks with Lookman’s agent on Wednesday.
"Lookman is very tempted by the idea of joining Inter and wearing their shirt," Romano noted.
"Inter are pleased with the player's openness and want to formalise their approach by submitting a serious offer."
While Premier League clubs and Atlético Madrid could theoretically secure the signature of the 27-year-old for €40 million, Inter will need to negotiate further, with Atalanta demanding more from Italian suitors.
That discrepancy adds an extra layer of complexity to the deal, especially given Lookman's desire to move on this summer.
Romano also touched on the events of last summer, when Lookman came close to joining Paris Saint-Germain, only for Atalanta to block the move following the sale of Teun Koopmeiners.
The forward briefly refused to train and endured a rocky period with manager Gian Piero Gasperini before eventually restoring the relationship.
"There was tension, particularly in the second half of the season. Lookman was frustrated, but he managed to pull himself together,” Romano explained.
"Now, after delivering a historic Europa League triumph, he’s hopeful the club will meet him halfway.”
The ball is now in Inter’s court, and Atalanta’s, to determine whether a deal can be struck in the coming days.
