Super Eagles 2 Ojodu City 0: Bankole and Ijeoma on target for Eric Chelle's team in friendly
Published: July 18, 2025
Nigeria’s Super Eagles B team, popularly known as the CHAN Eagles, secured a 2-0 victory over Ojodu City in a warm-up match ahead of the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Goals from Abia Warriors’ midfielder Anthony Ijoma and Kwara United full-back Afeez Bankole in the second half sealed the win for the home-based Eagles after a frustrating first 45 minutes.
Despite several weeks of intense training under newly appointed coach Eric Chelle at Remo Stars’ training complex, the CHAN Eagles initially struggled to break down a resolute Ojodu City side, who defended compactly and caused problems on the counterattack.
However, the Malian tactician made key tactical adjustments at halftime, which proved to be decisive.
The CHAN Eagles came out firing in the second half, applying consistent pressure on Ojodu City.
Their breakthrough came in the 51st minute when Anthony Ijoma found the back of the net, capitalizing on the Eagles’ dominant display after the break.
As Nigeria maintained control, they eventually doubled their lead in the 87th minute, with Afeez Bankole beating the goalkeeper to secure a morale-boosting victory.
Coach Chelle is expected to be pleased with his side’s improved second-half performance as he continues to fine-tune the squad ahead of the tournament.
With competition for places intensifying, the former Mali coach will be focused on selecting the best possible team as Nigeria eyes its first-ever CHAN title.
The CHAN tournament is reserved for players who feature in their domestic leagues, and Nigeria will be hoping to make a strong impression when the tournament kicks off on August 2.
