'We are prepared' – Wafcon 2024 leading assister Okoronkwo fires warning to Banyana Banyana
Published: July 21, 2025
Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has fired a warning shot at South Africa’s Banyana Banyana ahead of their highly anticipated semifinal showdown at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Okoronkwo has been one of Nigeria’s standout performers in the tournament, notching one goal and a tournament-high four assists for the Super Falcons.
Her creative spark has been instrumental in Nigeria’s dominant run to the semifinals, and the forward is brimming with confidence ahead of the clash with the reigning champions.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Okoronkwo expressed belief in the Super Falcons' readiness to reclaim the continental title.
“When I am on the field, I just want to help the team the best way I can, whether it is by scoring or assisting,” she said.
“The fact that we want to win the tournament is a great motivation to bring the trophy back to Nigeria.”
The forward emphasized the team’s unwavering focus and collective ambition.
“We go into every game with the same mentality to want to win, regardless of what is in front of us. We are prepared and ready to win tomorrow,” she stated.
“We're not really looking at the other team's stats; we just focus on us and what we're going to do tomorrow.”
Nigeria, record winners of the WAFCON title, will be looking to avenge their penalty shootout loss to South Africa in the 2022 edition.
With Okoronkwo in top form and the team firing on all cylinders, the Super Falcons will be determined to claim victory as they look to keep their hopes of securing a record-extending tenth WAFCON title alive.
