Akpom chooses Ipswich: Super Eagles hopeful snubs Middlesbrough, Birmingham throw in the towel
Published: August 06, 2025
Super Eagles hopeful Chuba Akpom has decided to join Ipswich Town on a season-long loan, turning down interest from both Middlesbrough and Birmingham, with the latter ending their pursuit.
Birmingham City made a final push to sign Akpom on Tuesday, attempting to secure a permanent transfer from Ajax Amsterdam.
The newly promoted Championship side were keen to strike a deal to buy the striker outright, unlike Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough who wanted to sign him on loan with an obligation to buy.
Ajax received a bid close to €7 million from Birmingham City and were keen on a permanent transfer to bring his time at the club to a definitive end.
According to Sky Sports UK, Ipswich Town are closing in on the signing of Akpom following a successful medical.
Birmingham City have pulled out of the race, after the 29-year-old made it clear to the Championship newcomers and Ajax Amsterdam that he wanted to join the Tractor Boys.
Ipswich Town are working on finalising the deal now ahead of their Championship opener against Birmingham City on Friday night.
Should Ipswich Town secure promotion to the Premier League, the deal includes a mandatory purchase clause worth approximately €8 million.
Ajax had been hoping to sell Chuba Akpom outright, but a loan move still offers financial relief, with the club set to save significantly on the striker’s wages.
