Sheffield United confirm squad numbers for three Nigerians ahead of season opener
Published: August 07, 2025
Sheffield United have confirmed that three players of Nigerian descent – Ehije Ukaki, Christian Nwachukwu and Femi Seriki – have been handed squad numbers ahead of the club’s Championship opener against Bristol City at Bramall Lane on Saturday, August 9.
In an official statement published on their website, the Blades listed the trio among the first team players for the new season.
Ukaki, a versatile forward, will wear the number 20 shirt – previously worn by Manchester United academy graduate Ben Brereton Díaz, who has returned to his parent club Southampton.
Notably, the number 20 jersey was once donned by retired striker of Nigerian descent Chris Armstrong during his time at Sheffield United.
The 20-year-old Ukaki made a strong impression in pre-season, scoring against Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice and League Two side Chesterfield.
He also featured in friendlies against Burton Albion, Rotherham United and York City.
Winger Christian Nwachukwu has been assigned the number 40 shirt, which holds a bit of history at Sheffield United, having previously been worn by current teammate Seriki, England defender Harry Maguire, and late Wales international Gary Speed.
Meanwhile, defender Seriki retains the number 38 jersey he wore throughout the 2023–24 and 2024-25 seasons.
The Blades will be aiming to start their Championship campaign on a strong note after narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premier League last term.
