'He's scored again' – Former Chelsea striker admits Rangers plan to sell Dessers now in doubt

Former Chelsea striker Billy Dodds has urged Rangers to reconsider any plans to sell Nigerian forward Cyriel Dessers this summer, following the striker’s impressive return to form.

Dessers, who finished last season as Rangers’ top scorer, has been at the centre of transfer speculation amid reported interest from Greek side AEK Athens.

With the club undergoing a summer revamp, his future at Ibrox has come under scrutiny. However, his recent performances have offered a timely reminder of his value.

After starting on the bench for the opening three matches of the season, Dessers was handed his first start in Rangers’ UEFA Champions League qualifying clash against Viktoria Plzen.

The 30-year-old made the most of the opportunity, scoring and providing an assist in a commanding 3-0 first-leg victory.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Dodds said selling Dessers now would be a "gamble" given his evident determination and recent impact.

"It would be a gamble now. Rangers were maybe looking to sell him going into the season,” Dodds stated.

"But I think the big man has bounced back again and I love players who show that."

Rangers have reportedly set a €5 million price tag for the striker, but Dodds believes Dessers has turned the situation around and put the decision firmly back in the club’s hands.

"He's scored again and he's probably put it back in Rangers’ court. I think probably Rangers did want to sell. But now, there’s a question mark about it."

Dodds acknowledged the striker’s inconsistency in front of goal but praised his character and determination.

"Yes, he misses chances and he’s the first to admit that. But it’s just little details," he added.

As tRangers prepare to compete on multiple fronts this season, Dessers' resurgence could prove vital in their quest for silverware.
