'Not yet' – Ten Hag reveals Boniface won't be in Leverkusen starting XI for DFB-Pokal clash
Published: August 14, 2025
Bayern Leverkusen head coach Erik ten Hag has addressed the chances of Victor Boniface starting in Friday’s DFB-Pokal clash against Regionalliga newcomers SG Sonnenhof Großaspach.
Boniface, who was instrumental in Leverkusen’s success during his debut season, endured a dip in form last term, eventually losing his starting spot to Czech forward Patrik Schick.
Under Ten Hag, the Nigerian striker has featured mainly as a substitute in pre-season, fueling speculation about his role ahead of the new campaign’s first competitive fixture.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the former Manchester United boss made it clear that Boniface is not yet ready to be considered for a starting berth.
"Boni is making progress, but he's not yet where he should be," said ten Hag before his departure as reported by the Bild.
Despite his current role, the Super Eagles forward will be determined to impress Erik ten Hag and reclaim his spot in the starting lineup.
With Nigeria gearing up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September, Boniface will be eager to regain top form and secure his place in the national team.
