'I actually achieved that' – Onyeka explains decision to leave Brentford on loan last season
Published: August 16, 2025
Nigeria international Frank Onyeka has shed light on the reasoning behind his loan move from Brentford to Augsburg last season.
In search of playing opportunities on a regular basis, the FC Midtjylland academy graduate joined Augsburg on a season-long loan in the summer of 2024.
Onyeka met his targets during his loan spell at Augsburg, starting 33 of a possible 35 matches across all competitions.
The Bees decided to loan him out to give their young midfielders more game time, while the Nigerian was eager to play week in, week out.
Onyeka admitted that limited game time at the Premier League club prompted him to seek a fresh challenge in Germany.
Speaking on The Culture League Podcast, he said: "The reason I went on loan last season was because I wanted to start more games.
"I played obviously in Brentford but I wasn’t getting much starts as I did in Germany. That’s why I went to Augsburg and I actually achieved that, which was good for me."
Onyeka added that the move not only benefited his career but also brought joy to those closest to him.
"I was happy. My family was happy, everyone around me was happy seeing me start every game."
Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season, the Super Eagles star emphasized his desire for stability and belonging.
"Going into the new season I want to be in a place I know that you are loved and respected. That’s my goal right now."
Onyeka linked up with Brentford later than his teammates for pre-season, having been on international duty with the Super Eagles at the Unity Cup and in a June friendly against Russia.
