2026 WCQ South Africa 1-1 Nigeria: Bassey scores to cancel out Troost-Ekong own goal
Published: September 09, 2025
Nigeria’s Super Eagles squandered a golden opportunity to close the gap on South Africa in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, coming from behind to settle for a 1-1 draw against the group leaders on Tuesday evening at the Free State Stadium.
The result means Nigeria are still six points behind the South Africans and they remain under pressure to secure maximum points in their remaining fixtures.
The match saw an early scare for the Super Eagles when William Troost-Ekong’s own goal in the 25th minute handed Bafana Bafama the lead.
Nigeria responded strongly, with Calvin Bassey equalizing in the 44th minute, expertly heading home a precise Dele-Bashiru cross.
The first half ended 1-1, with both sides demonstrating attacking intent and defensive resilience.
In the second half, Nigeria made key substitutions, including Samuel Chukwueze, Tolu Arokodare, and Uche, looking to take control of the game.
South Africa also introduced James Monyane to refresh their lineup, but neither side could find a breakthrough despite several promising chances.
With the draw, Nigeria now occupies second spot in Group C with 11 points, trailing South Africa, who lead with 17 points from eight matches.
Next month, the Super Eagles will face Lesotho in South Africa, before a home game against Gernot Rohr's Benin in Uyo.
