Super Eagles player ratings: Bassey shines, Lookman rusty, Troost-Ekong erratic, Fredrick reliable

Nigeria were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa on Tuesday evening at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein. 

The result casts doubt over the Super Eagles’ chances of qualifying for the World Cup.

The starters

Goalkeeper

Stanley Nwabali: Nwabali was commanding in goal as usual, though he experienced a few nervy moments. (6.5/10)

Defenders

Calvin Bassey: The Fulham defender delivered a resolute performance, impressing both in defense and attack. (8/10)

William Troost-Ekong: The Super Eagles captain endured a difficult game, conceding an own goal in the first half.(3/10)

Benjamin Frederick: Frederick once again put in a composed and assured display at the back for the Eagles. (7/10)

Ola Aina: Sadly, the Nottingham defender picked up an injury early in the first half. 5.5/10

Midfielders and forwards 

Wilfred Ndidi: The former Leicester City midfielder struggled to make an impact and was forced off with an injury in the second half. (6/10)

Alex Iwobi: Iwobi was composed on the ball for most of the game but was let down by several misplaced passes. (5.5/10)

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru: The Lazio midfielder struggled to assert himself in the middle of the park. (6/10)

Ademola Lookman: The Atalanta forward, who has been inactive at club level since May, lacked his usual sharpness.  (5/10)

Moses Simon: Simon was unable to get the better of the South African defender Zuko Mdunyelwa and offered little going forward. (4.5/10)

Cyriel Dessers: The former Rangers striker failed to make any real impact in the game. (4/10)

The substitutes

Bruno Onyemaechi: Onyemaechi once again offered little going forward and struggled to deliver quality crosses into the box. (5/10)

Tolu Arokodare: The Wolves striker injected energy into the Eagles’ attack and looked lively during the first fifteen minutes of the second half. (6/10)

Samuel Chukwueze: Introduced late in the game, Chukwueze failed to make any meaningful impact. (4.5/10)

Christantus Uche: The new Crystal Palace player showed energy in midfield but was unable to fully stamp his authority. (5/10)

Bright Osayi-Samuel: Osayi-Samuel impressed with solid defending and energetic runs forward. (6.5/10)
