'We are tied on points with RSA' – Rohr urges Fifa to make decision on Mokoena ineligibility

Benin coach Gernot Rohr has urged Fifa to issue a ruling on the eligibility case surrounding South Africa midfielder Teboho Mokoena, which could have major implications for the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

Bafana Bafana are under scrutiny after Mokoena, who was suspended due to yellow card accumulation, featured in their March qualifier against Lesotho.

The Benin Football Federation has lodged an appeal, arguing that the incident constitutes fielding an ineligible player, an offence that, under FIFA rules, carries a three-point and three-goal deduction.

Following the September international matches, Benin sit three points behind South Africa in the provisional Group C standings.

A favourable ruling from Fifa would dock South Africa the points, leaving the two nations level and setting up a finely poised race for World Cup qualification.

Speaking after Benin’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Lesotho on Tuesday night, Rohr expressed frustration at the lack of clarity.

In quotes relayed by DB Medias, the former Super Eagles coach said: "If all goes well, today we are tied on points with South Africa, who should lose three points according to the rules.

"I don't understand why FIFA hasn't made a decision yet, but the rules are very clear on this subject.

"In that case, we would be tied with South Africa and anything would still be possible."

Benin, who have never qualified for the Fifa World Cup, face Nigeria on the final matchday in Uyo next month.

Ahead of the next round of qualifiers, the Super Eagles sit third in the group on 11 points following their 1-1 draw with South Africa on Tuesday.
