APAM Doubtful For Afcon
Published: December 18, 2012
Despite widespread reports at the start of the week that Stade Rennes of France defender, Apam Onyekachi has been cleared for a return to the Super Eagles, latest information from the national team’s camp in Abuja indicates that it is not yet Uhuru for the former Rangers International of Enugu and OGC Nice of France stopper.
Apam’s well-wishers went agog with delight Monday night, when news first emerged that the injury-plagued defender had been given an all-clear to make a spirited return to the Eagles’ set-up, in order to plug a spot in the team’s leaky defence, but the national squad’s media officer, Ben Alaiya is singing a different song.
While baring his mind on the issue during a live interview on Star FM programme, MegaSports on Tuesday morning from the Eagles camp, Alaiya declared emphatically that it is doubtful if any player just returning from injury would be part of the team to next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Although the respected sports editor and general manager refused to be specific with any names, he was emphatic that it will be difficult for the like of Apam and Joel Chukwuma Obi to make the Eagles’ final list to South Africa 2013, considering that they are just coming out of long spells with various cases of injuries.
“I don’t want to mention any name right now, but I can assure you that any player that is just coming back from injury is unlikely to be among the players that will be announced in the list that we are expecting this week,” Alaiya stressed.
