Former Eagles Gaffer, Samson Siasia Wants Government To Immortalize Yekini
Published: May 07, 2013
Former Super Eagles gaffer Samson Siasia has commented on his love for record goalscorer of the National Team, Rashidi Yekini, who sadly lost his life just over a year ago, on May 4, 2012.
Siasia is unhappy that the Federal Government has not done enough to recognize the iconic footballer, who scored the first goal for Nigeria in her maiden appearance at the Fifa World Cup held in the United States 19 years ago.
In an exclusive phone interview with Sports 360 show on Voxafrica TV in the UK (Sky 218 & DStv 191), Samson Siasia said: ''He was a very quiet person, cracked some jokes. All he knew was to play and make Nigeria happy.
''The first goal Nigeria ever scored at the World Cup was by him. Nigeria has not qualified for the World Cup before. It was a great memory for each and everyone of us.
''It is just so sad that he is gone. Nigerians don't know much about how Yekini died, that's the most annoying part of it. I am so disappointed.''
During the game that was played last week in honor of Rashidi Yekini, Siasia was disappointed with the poor turnout of his former colleagues in the National Team.
He told Sports 360: ''I spoke with some of our colleagues, they said they were not informed about what was going on.
''I was informed about a month ago. I don't understand how communication was a problem for ex internationals to come together to honor our hero.
''When he died a year ago, we did not come because of the Muslim issue. You die, the next day they have to bury you. I felt so bad.''
In conclusion, Samson Siasia advised the government to immortalize Rashidi Yekini, whose 37 goals in 58 appearances for the three - time African champions remains unmatched.
''We have to immortalize him, he has done so well for this country. Up till today, he is the highest goalscorer. You can say he is the best Nigerian player too.
''How do you qualify a best player? Is it not from results or the goals he scored. He was one of the best and he did very well, he gave his heart to Nigeria.
''Whenever Rashidi is playing, you know he has a very serious mind and wants to get result. The country has not done enough to remember what he has done for the country.
''Up till today, from 1994, the houses we were promised after wining the Nations Cup,we have not gotten anything. Even Rashidi died without getting his own house,'' Siasia said to Sports 360.
