Usain Bolt Of Nigeria, Mikel: This Bronze Is Like Gold For Us
Published: August 21, 2016
Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel was pleased that the Nigeria U23 National Team won the country’s only medal at the Olympic Games after beating Honduras 3-2 in Saturday’s bronze medal match.
Because of a flight hitch, the Nigeria squad arrived in Brazil barely seven hours to their opening game versus Japan but still topped Group B of the competition, then defeated Denmark in the quarterfinals before losing 2-0 to Germany in the last four.
“We were disappointed in that game we lost. And I like to always win. We were disappointed because we had the dream of playing the gold match,” said Mikel to reporters.
“But we are very proud of the team that played very well . We have a fantastic coach .
“Very proud of the entire team, which has a great future. It is an honor to win this bronze, is like a gold for us.”
Apart from captaining Team Nigeria, Mikel was Nigeria’s most popular athlete at the Olympic Games, and has been labeled the Usain Bolt of Nigeria by the Brazilian press, including TV Globo.
