Arsenal Fans Have Their Say: Kanu's Best Goal Came Against Chelsea
Published: April 25, 2018
Tuesday, April 24 was the anniversary of that special goal former Nigeria international Nwankwo Kanu netted in Arsenal's 6-1 rout of Middlesbrough on game week 35 in the Premier League during the 1998-99 season.
Kanu's back-heel goal against Boro was an outrageous piece of skill he usually produces in training but that was the first time he scored like that in a first-team match in England, less than three months after he joined the club from Inter Milan.
Arsenal celebrated the 19th anniversary of the brilliant goal by asking their fans to choose their favourite goal scored by Kanu and strikes against Chelsea, Deportivo de La Coruña, Middlesbrough and Tottenham Hotspur were shortlisted.
The final results of the poll revealed that the former Super Eagles captain scored his best goal for the club against Chelsea.
With more than half of the votes, 56 percent, his strike against The Blues was picked as the most eye-catching goal ahead of efforts against Tottenham (23 percent), Middlesbrough (13 percent) and Deportivo (8 percent).
Kanu struck three times in that memorable game at Stamford Bridge on October 23, 1999 but his solo effort in the the 90th minute came out on top as his best goal in an Arsenal shirt.
