Two Nigeria-Eligible Strikers Win Penalties For Manchester United In 5-Goal Thriller Vs West Brom U18
Published: November 26, 2019
Manchester United fought back from a two-goal deficit to earn a 3-2 victory in a keenly contested U18 Premier League Cup match against West Brom at the Palm Training Ground on Tuesday afternoon.
United coach Neil Ryan included two players of Nigerian descent in his starting line-up, England U16 captain Shola Shoretire and Republic of Ireland youth-teamer Deji Sotona, while Netherlands U17 star Dillon Hoogewerf was not in the matchday squad.
The Baggies could not have asked for a better start with Finley Thorndike giving them the lead in the fifth minute and it became 2-0 three minutes later when Thorndike scored his second of the game from the penalty spot.
After Shoretire came close to halving the deficit, United pulled a goal back through Charlie McCann, the midfielder converting a spot kick after the pacy Sotona was brought down by a West Brom defender.
Nine minutes later McCann scored a deserved equaliser for the Red Devils as he converted his second penalty after Shoretire was fouled in the box.
United got the go-ahead goal thirteen minutes from time when Forson finished off a cross from Sotona to make it 3-2.
