Leicester Boss Explains Why He Brought On 3 Strikers Including Iheanacho In Loss To Spurs
Published: July 19, 2020
Leicester City's top four hopes are hanging in the balance after they were thrashed 3-0 by Europa League hopefuls Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening.
Though the defeat to Jose Mourinho's team left Leicester City fourth in the table, they have a tough game against a direct competitor for a Champions League spot, Manchester United on the final day of the 2019-2020 season.
The Foxes were dead and buried at the end of the first half, with an own goal from Justin James and a Harry Kane brace putting the London team 3-0 up.
Three attack-minded players in Demarai Gray, Kelechi Iheahancho and George Hirst came on in the second half as Leicester City sought to find a way back into the game, but still the goals refused to come.
Explaining the thinking behind his substitutions in the second half, manager Brendan Rodgers told Leicester's official webpage : "I was just thinking that if we could get a goal, goals can always change the momentum of the game. I felt if we could get a goal, then that’ll give us that impetus to go on and then you just never know.
"Obviously, we bring on an extra attacker in Dimi (Demarai Gray) and then we bring Kels (Kelechi Iheanacho) into it as well and young George Hirst, so we’re still trying to push to get goals.
"But we just couldn’t quite make the breakthrough and their goalkeeper made a few good saves."

Iheanacho, who has tallied ten goals in all competitions this term, has not gone the distance in the Premier League since the 1-0 loss to Norwich City at the end of February.
