Glasgow Rangers in talks to sign a midfielder to provide competition for Super Eagles ace
Published: August 19, 2021Manager Steven Gerrard has revealed that Glasgow Rangers are keen to bring in another midfielder before the close of the transfer window to provide competition for the likes of Joe Aribo and Glen Kamara.
Despite an injury-plagued campaign which kept Aribo on the sidelines for close to two months, the Super Eagles number 10 was slightly overused last season, making 42 appearances in all competitions for the Light Blues.
The Scottish Premiership champions would be planning for the future if they eventually sign a new midfielder as Aribo is expected to depart the club before the end of his contract, with the English Premier League his ideal destination.
Asked if Rangers are missing personnel in midfield, Gerrard told reporters at Wednesday's press conference : "Yeah, that's the reason why I've just confirmed that we are looking to strengthen in that area.
"We have got a couple of players that are capable of dropping down and playing as hybrids if you like but it is an area where last year come the end of the season after the amount of games and volume of games we felt we were a little bit short at times.
"We did ask Glen Kamara, Steven Davies and Joe Aribo to go above and beyond and they did that but I don't want to be as vulnerable as I was towards the back end of the season.
"I do want to have options, I do like two top players in each position and if we can get this signing that we're looking at over the line in the coming days then I'll be really satisfied with the engine room."

Aribo was one of three Nigerian players that participated in Rangers final workout before their Europa League play-off tie with Armenian champions Alashkert, the others being the in-form Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun.
