Former Arsenal youth teamer of Nigerian descent passes away after illness
Published: August 28, 2021
Former Arsenal youth teamer of Nigerian descent Sam Oji has passed away at the age of 35 following a battle with illness.
Born in London, he was the cousin of Anglo-Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer Lemar Obika.
Oji was at the Arsenal academy for four years, joining at the age of fifteen, but didn't make his senior debut before transferring to Birmingham City.
And that was followed by stints at Leyton Orient, Hereford United, Ljungskile SK, Tamworth, Limerick and Galway United, before spells at Worcester City, Hednesford Town and Highgate United.
Oji's former clubs Highgate United, Leyton Orient and Birmingham City have taken to social media to pay tribute to their former player.
A center-back by trade during his playing career, the Anglo-Nigerian was appointed assistant manager at Midland League Premier Division side Highgate United in July 2021.
Samuel Oji is survived by his wife and children.
