Brentford star in danger of missing Super Eagles' WCQ vs Liberia after positive Covid-19 test
Published: August 28, 2021
Frank Onyeka may have to wait for his competitive debut for the Super Eagles despite being named in the latest squad list for a 2022 World Cup qualifier against Liberia on September 3.
Brentford are looking to protect their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season when they face Aston Villa at Villa Park but must do so without their influential holding midfielder Onyeka.
The Bees confirmed just before kickoff that Onyeka has been replaced in the starting lineup by Ghoddos after he tested positive for coronavirus.
The former FC Midtjylland man impressed in his first two starts in the Premier League, against Arsenal and Crystal Palace, helping Brentford pick up four points from six.
Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr previously named four midfielders in a 23-man squad for next week's clash in Lagos against Liberia, the others being British-based trio Oghenekaro Etebo, Wilfred Ndidi and Joe Aribo.
Kingsley Michael (Bologna) and Innocent Bonke (Malmo) are the midfielders named in the reserve list.
After seventenn minutes at Villa Park, the scores were tied at 1-1 as Emiliano Buendia cancelled out Ivan Toney's opener.
